TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My instruction consists of a holistic and creative approach to singing with regard to each individual student. Just as no two people are the same, no two voices are the same, and therefore cannot be dealt with in exactly the same manner. It is important to have a flexible approach with each student, tailored to that individual’s learning style, personality, and unique vocal qualities. My teaching style is well-rounded by exploring vocal technique, artistry, musicality, and personal development. I believe that the voice is a personal instrument that reflects the innermost thoughts and emotions of the individual. Throughout private instruction, each student will gain the confidence needed to succeed, either on a personal level, professional level, or both.

One of the strengths of my teaching style is my ability to communicate proper vocal production to my students. I have worked diligently at becoming a professional singer, therefore I understand the development of the voice with regards to technique and musicality. I can readily relate to each of my students as I have been in their position before, which I believe enables open and honest communication, and develops trust. I maintain a positive atmosphere in order to achieve the most positive response from the student.

In order that my students better understand the processes involved in singing, I will discuss how the body works to produce sound. I primarily use classical repertoire and musical theatre repertoire, however, I am open to whatever music the individual is passionate about. Each individual will learn correct vocal production and placement, an anatomy of the voice, performance skills, music history, and basic music theory. Students all have different reasons for singing, and I am here to help facilitate them in their process. I am willing to aid students for long or short periods of time, depending on their need for instruction.

My students will have the opportunity to sing in competitions, master classes, recitals, and other various performances, depending on their interests. Currently, I am an Adjunct Faculty Member in Voice at Saginaw Valley State University. I am also a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and am very active throughout the community, which opens up many opportunities for my students.
